How Bafana qualified for 2026
South Africa won CAF Group C in the African qualifiers. They beat Rwanda, Benin, Lesotho, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe on the way to topping the group. Nigeria, the side many tipped to win the group, finished second and went into the playoff route.
The result was sealed in November 2025 with a 2-0 home win over Rwanda at FNB Stadium. It was South Africa’s first qualification for a senior World Cup since they hosted in 2010. The country last qualified on merit (not as hosts) for France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002.
The 16 year gap broke a long run of near misses. Bafana finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. That tournament was the proof Broos’s plan was working. Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup was the next step.
Group A: Bafana’s draw
The draw could have been kinder. Or much harder. Group A has the hosts, an Asian side with Premier League experience, and a European side that has been to two of the last three World Cups.
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 11/06, 21:00 SAST | Mexico v South Africa | Estadio Azteca, Mexico City |
| Thu 18/06, 16:00 SAST | Czech Republic v South Africa | Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta |
| Thu 25/06, 03:00 SAST | South Africa v South Korea | Estadio BBVA, Monterrey |
The opener is the headline. Bafana versus the hosts in front of 87,000 at Estadio Azteca. The last team to win the opening match of a World Cup as the away side was France against South Korea in 2002. History is against Bafana. The neutrals will be on their side.
Group rivals: Mexico, South Korea, Czech Republic.
The squad: who Hugo Broos picks
Broos named a 31-player provisional squad. The final 26 is due in late May. The likely starting XI is built around five anchors.
Ronwen Williams in goal. Captain. Mamelodi Sundowns. The man who saved four penalties in the AFCON 2023 quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde. The number one is not up for debate.
Mothobi Mvala at centre back. Sundowns. Reads the game well, strong in the air, the senior voice in the back four.
Teboho Mokoena in midfield. Sundowns. The press-resistant deep midfielder who controls the tempo. Probably the most important Bafana player after Williams.
Themba Zwane creates from the half-space. Sundowns again. 36 years old at the World Cup, but still the most technically gifted player Bafana have.
Up front, Lyle Foster (#9, age 25) leads the line. Burnley striker, fast over the channel, capable of finishing with either foot. Sage Campbell (#24, age 20) and Oswin Appollis (#7, age 24) bring pace off the bench.
How Bafana play under Broos
Broos has settled on a 4-2-3-1 with two screening midfielders. Mokoena partners either Sphephelo Sithole or Aubrey Modiba in the double pivot. The shape is defensive first and counter-attacking second.
The press starts from Foster but rarely goes high up the pitch. Broos prefers to stay compact, win the ball in the middle third, and break through Zwane and Mokoena. It is not pretty. It does win matches.
Strengths: organisation, set pieces, goalkeeper. Weaknesses: chance creation in open play. Bafana scored 16 goals in 10 qualifying matches. Most of those came from crosses or set pieces.
Bafana’s World Cup record
South Africa have been to the World Cup three times before 2026: 1998 (France), 2002 (Korea/Japan), and 2010 (home). They have never been past the group stage. The closest call was 2002 when Bafana drew 2-2 with Paraguay and beat Slovenia 1-0 but lost out on goal difference to Spain.
The 2010 home tournament ended in heartbreak. Bafana beat France 2-1, drew with Mexico, and lost to Uruguay. They became the first host nation to fail to escape the group stage.
2026 is the chance to fix all of that. The new 48-team format means eight third-placed teams advance to the Round of 32. A single win plus a draw is probably enough to go through. Two wins guarantees it.
Betting on Bafana from South Africa
South African sportsbooks will price Bafana keenly. Demand for outright and tournament markets on Bafana is one of the biggest local football betting events of the year. Shop around for the best price.
- Bafana to qualify from Group A. Best South African price tends to sit around 2.40 to 2.70. Worth it given the 8 third-placed teams progress route.
- Bafana v Mexico, draw no bet on the draw market. Mexico are short. Bafana to avoid defeat (the draw or a Bafana win) prices around 2.05 to 2.20. The Mexican crowd will be loud, but the Bafana defence has not conceded more than once in 9 of their last 12 matches.
- Ronwen Williams to be top SA save-maker. Special market on Gbets and YesPlay. Goalkeeper saves are still a soft market in South Africa. Worth a small stake.
- Lyle Foster, anytime tournament scorer. Around 1.95 on most SA books. Foster is Bafana’s main attacking threat and starts every game.
