The story

Two leagues, three cities, one near miss

Born in 1967 in the ABA, the Nets were champions twice behind Julius Erving, who turned the dunk into art. They joined the NBA in 1976 and had to sell Dr J just to survive.

As the New Jersey Nets, Jason Kidd dragged them to back-to-back Finals in 2002 and 2003. Both ended in defeat. The team moved to Brooklyn in 2012 chasing a bigger stage.

The Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving super-team promised everything and delivered heartbreak, undone by injury and absence. Brooklyn is still waiting for its first NBA title.

The Dr J era delivered two ABA titles in 1974 and 1976, and the early-2000s Kidd teams featured Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson, yet the championship has stayed just out of reach in every era.
