The story

Heat Culture, and stars who arrive hungry

Founded in 1988, the Heat built a culture under Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra that turns undrafted players into rotation pieces and demands conditioning above all.

Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal won the 2006 title. Then the LeBron James, Wade and Chris Bosh Big Three reached four straight Finals and won in 2012 and 2013, the second saved by Ray Allen's corner three.

The post-LeBron Heat keep punching above their weight, reaching the Finals in 2020 and 2023 as underdogs behind Jimmy Butler. In Miami, effort is the entry fee.

The 1990s foundation was laid by Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway, whose physical playoff wars with the Knicks gave the young franchise its edge.
