The story

Twenty-seven years, then the first title

One of the WNBA's original 1997 teams, the Liberty were the league's great near-miss for a generation. They reached the Finals in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002 and lost every time.

The wait ended in 2024. Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones brought New York its first championship, a quarter of a century in the making, in a packed Barclays Center.

The Liberty are now a marquee franchise in the league's biggest market, with the long-suffering finally rewarded.

For the fans

You are the patient ones. Four Finals, four heartbreaks, then the breakthrough. The first banner means more for having waited so long.

For the punters

A title-window contender, so they are often favoured. With three stars, blowout potential is real, which makes the spread and team totals more interesting than the moneyline.
