Taurasi, Griner and a run-and-gun crown
An original 1997 franchise, the Mercury found their identity with Diana Taurasi, drafted first overall in 2004 and now the league's all-time leading scorer.
Phoenix won titles in 2007 and 2009 playing a fast, high-scoring style, then added a third in 2014 once Brittney Griner anchored the defence. Three championships in eight years.
Taurasi has spent her whole career in Phoenix, the rare superstar who never left, and the Mercury have stayed a draw because of her.
You watched the best scorer in WNBA history wear one jersey her whole career. That loyalty is the heart of this club.
High pace in the Taurasi years meant overs often cashed. As the roster aged the edge moved to spots and matchups rather than blanket backing.
