The story

Delle Donne and the 2019 breakthrough

Founded in 1998, the Mystics were one of the league's most patient projects, often competitive but never over the line.

That changed in 2019. Elena Delle Donne, the league MVP, and Finals MVP Emma Meesseman led Washington to its first championship in a five-game series win over Connecticut.

Delle Donne played through a serious back injury in that run, which made the title one of the most admired in league history.

For the fans

You saw an MVP push through real pain to win it. That toughness is what you remember about 2019.

For the punters

A team whose ceiling tracked Delle Donne's health. When she was right they were a contender, when she was not the edge vanished.
