The podium market pays if your driver finishes in the top three, in any order. Some books also offer a top six version for an even shorter price. It is the market most experienced punters lean on, because it lands far more often than the race winner.

A top car priced at 2.20 to win the race might be just 1.30 for a podium. You give up some return for a much better chance.

01 / How it works

How podium prices work

A podium bet wins if your driver is classified first, second or third. Because three drivers fill the podium, the chance is roughly three times higher than winning outright, so the price is much shorter. R100 on a 1.30 podium returns R130, a R30 profit.

Top six finish is the next step down. It is useful for a strong midfield driver who is unlikely to reach the podium but very likely to score points. Prices there often sit from 1.10 to 4.00.

02 / When to use it

When a podium bet beats a race winner

Use the podium market when you are confident a car is fast but not sure it can win. The two McLaren drivers, a strong Ferrari, or a Mercedes on a good weekend are classic podium plays. You take a near-certain car at a fair price rather than gamble on the exact winner.

It also smooths out the safety car lottery. A late safety car can cost a leader the win but still leave them on the podium, so your bet survives.

03 / Worked example

A worked ZAR example

You think a top driver is a lock for the rostrum but might not win. You stake R200 on the podium at 1.40. If they finish in the top three, you get R280 back, a R80 profit. If they finish fourth or retire, you lose the R200. The lower price is the cost of the safer outcome.
