Pole position betting is settled on Saturday, not Sunday. You back the driver who sets the fastest lap in qualifying and starts the race at the front. It rewards pure one-lap speed, which is a different skill to race pace.

It is a favourite market for fans who follow qualifying form closely, because some drivers are far stronger over one lap than over a full race.

01 / How it works

How qualifying betting works

You pick the driver to set the fastest single lap in qualifying. Prices usually run from about 2.00 for a strong qualifier to 12.00 or longer for the rest. The bet settles the moment qualifying ends, so you know your result a day before the race.

One-lap pace and race pace are not the same. A car can be brilliant over a single lap and fade on Sunday, or the other way around. That gap is where the pole market gets interesting.

02 / Reading the form

Reading qualifying form

Some drivers are known pole specialists. Charles Leclerc, for example, has taken many poles for Ferrari even in years the car could not win on Sunday. Backing a strong qualifier in a car that lights up over one lap is the core of this market.

Our driver pages flag who is sharp in qualifying and who is better in the race. Read the driver history before you back a pole.

03 / Worked example

A worked ZAR example

You back a known pole specialist at 3.00 with R100. If they top qualifying, you get R300 back, a R200 profit. If they qualify second, you lose. Because it settles on Saturday, you are free to bet a separate race market on Sunday with a clear head.

Page FAQ

What is F1 pole position betting?

It is a bet on which driver sets the fastest lap in qualifying and starts the race first. It is settled on Saturday after qualifying ends.

Is pole the same as winning the race?

No. Pole is about one-lap qualifying speed. Plenty of pole sitters do not win the race, and plenty of winners start lower down. They are two different markets.

Which drivers are good for pole bets?

Known one-lap specialists. Charles Leclerc has taken many poles for Ferrari, sometimes in cars that could not win the race. Check qualifying form, not just the championship table.

Is pole betting beginner friendly?

It is simple and settles early, which some beginners like. Keep stakes small, set a budget, and call 0800 006 008 if it stops being fun. 18+.
