Late own goal earns Qatar a point
Qatar opened their World Cup with a hard-earned 1-1 draw against Switzerland on 13/06/2026. Switzerland looked set to take all three points. Then Miro Muheim turned the ball into his own net in the 90th minute. That late own goal earned Qatar a point right at the death.
It did not spark a run. Qatar lost 6-0 to Canada in their next game and sit bottom of Group B. That opening draw is the only point they have so far.
Switzerland bounced back from the late blow. They beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and moved up to second in Group B on four points. They are in good shape to reach the knockout rounds.
