Baccarat 2026: 98.94% RTP Banker Bet and SA Player Guide

Baccarat 2026: 98.94% RTP banker bet and SA player guide

Baccarat is the second-best RTP table game in the casino after blackjack. The Banker bet returns 98.94% over the long run, the Player bet 98.76%. The Tie bet is a trap. The game has a reputation as a high-roller pastime but most online versions run from R5 to R10 minimum. There are no decisions to memorise, the dealer plays it for you.

The rules in 60 seconds

  • Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. You bet on which one wins, or on a Tie.
  • Each hand gets two cards. The hand closest to a total of 9 wins.
  • Card values: Ace = 1, 2-9 = face value, 10/J/Q/K = 0.
  • If a hand total is 10 or more, drop the tens digit. (15 becomes 5.)
  • A third card may be drawn under the “third-card rule” (the dealer follows it automatically, you don’t decide).
  • Highest total wins. If both hands tie, Tie bets win and Player/Banker bets push.

The three bets and their RTP

Banker betPays 1:1 minus 5% commission. House edge 1.06%. RTP 98.94%. The best bet on the table.
Player betPays 1:1, no commission. House edge 1.24%. RTP 98.76%. Second-best bet.
Tie betPays 8:1 (some tables 9:1). House edge 14.4% on 8:1 payout. Avoid.

Why does Banker pay less than Player despite winning more often? Because of the 5% commission. The commission is the casino’s edge. Without it, Banker would be a positive-expectation bet, which casinos do not allow.

The simplest possible strategy

Always bet Banker. That’s the strategy. Banker has the lowest house edge, so over a long enough session, it loses you the least money.

Some players “follow the shoe” by betting whichever hand has been winning recently. This is a variance management technique, not a system that beats the math. Each shoe of cards has memory only as long as the deck hasn’t been reshuffled. Most online live baccarat reshuffles every 6-8 decks deep.

Common baccarat variants

  • Punto Banco. The standard online version. Player vs Banker, third-card rule fixed. Found at every SA operator.
  • Mini Baccarat. Smaller table, faster pace, lower minimums. Same math.
  • Speed Baccarat. Live dealer Punto Banco at high speed (~27 seconds per round). Same math as standard.
  • Squeeze Baccarat. Live dealer slowly reveals the cards for tension. Same math, slower.
  • Dragon Tiger. Single-card cousin of baccarat. Two cards drawn, highest wins. House edge 3.73% on Dragon/Tiger bets. Popular in Asian markets.
  • Andar Bahar. Indian-origin card game in the same family. Single card chosen, dealer alternates between Andar and Bahar piles until match. Found at YesPlay (BetGames) and Cloudbet.

Baccarat FAQ

What’s the best bet in baccarat?

Banker. RTP 98.94%, the lowest house edge among the three main bets. Always bet Banker for the best long-run odds.

Is the 5% Banker commission worth paying?

Yes. Even after the 5% commission, Banker still has a 1.06% house edge versus Player’s 1.24%. The commission is the price for the better odds, and it’s still worth it.

Why do players track results in baccarat?

Tradition more than maths. Bead Plate, Big Road and Small Road grids show the pattern of recent results. Players use them to “follow streaks” or “bet against patterns”. The grids do not change the underlying probabilities. Pure entertainment.

Should I ever bet Tie?

No. The Tie bet has a 14.4% house edge on the standard 8:1 payout. That’s worse than American Roulette’s worst bet. Skip Tie completely.

How fast does an online baccarat round take?

Speed Baccarat runs at about 27 seconds per round. Standard live baccarat is 50-60 seconds. RNG baccarat is 5-10 seconds.

What’s the minimum bet on baccarat in SA?

Most SA operators run live baccarat from R5-R10 minimum. RNG baccarat starts at R1. VIP baccarat tables go from R100 minimum upwards.
