Baccarat, where the Banker bet pays you to do nothing
Baccarat is the second best RTP table game in the casino. Banker pays 98.94 percent. Player pays 98.76 percent. Tie is a trap. Tables run from R5 minimum, no decisions to memorise, the dealer plays it for you.
The maths on every baccarat table, ranked
Every baccarat round, you pick from Banker, Player or Tie. The payouts have not changed in fifty years and neither has our advice. The numbers below are the long-run truth.
Banker wins slightly more often than Player because of the third card rule. The 5% commission is the casino's tax for letting you bet that side. Even after the commission, Banker stays the lowest house edge bet on a baccarat table.
Slightly worse than Banker, but you skip the 5% commission so the maths is easier to follow at the table. A reasonable backup if you do not want to track commission round to round.
Worse than the worst bet on American roulette. The 8:1 payout is set up to look tempting, but the maths is brutal. The Tie bet is a trap.
Two hands, three bets, one winner
Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. You bet on which hand wins, or on a Tie. Card values: Ace = 1, two to nine count at face value, ten and the picture cards count as zero.
The hand closest to a total of 9 wins. If a total goes over 9, drop the tens digit, so 15 becomes 5. A third card may be drawn under the third card rule. The dealer follows it automatically, you do not decide.

Closest to 9 wins. Dealer follows the third card rule for you.
Always bet Banker, that is the whole strategy
Bet Banker every hand, don't overthink it
Banker has the lowest house edge, so over a long session, you lose the least money. Some players follow the shoe by backing whichever hand has been winning lately. That is variance management, not a system that beats the maths. Most online live baccarat tables reshuffle every six to eight decks deep, so the shoe has no memory worth tracking. Avoid every side bet you see on the table. Side bets are how the game pays for the dealer's hand. Stick to Banker.
Common baccarat variants
Four of these are the same maths in different wrappers. Two are cousins that share the family name but not the house edge.
Punto Banco
The standard version at every SA online casino. Player versus Banker, third card rule fixed, fixed payouts, no player decision. The maths above applies.
Speed Baccarat
Live dealer Punto Banco run at high pace. A round closes in about 27 seconds. Same maths, more decisions per hour, so faster bankroll burn.
Squeeze Baccarat
The dealer slowly reveals the cards for tension. Same maths, slower pace. Picked by players who want the casino floor feel.
Mini Baccarat
Smaller table, faster pace, lower minimums than the main floor. Same maths. Found in most SA casino lobbies under live or RNG.
Dragon Tiger
Single card cousin of baccarat. Two cards drawn, highest wins. House edge 3.73% on Dragon and Tiger bets. Popular at YesPlay and Cloudbet.
Andar Bahar
Indian-origin card game in the same family. A single card is chosen, then the dealer alternates between Andar and Bahar piles until a match. Found at YesPlay (BetGames) and Cloudbet.
Same maths, very different pace

Variance is the actual opponent. The boring advice is what separates people who walk away with money from people who chase losses.
Per hand, of your bankroll
Never stake more than one to three percent of your bankroll on a single hand. At R5 minimum tables, that is plenty of room.
Skip the betting systems
Martingale doubles your stake after each loss until you win. The math sounds clever but in practice you hit the table cap or run out of bankroll long before you recover.
Fibonacci, Paroli, Labouchere are all dressed up the same way. None of them change Banker's 1.06% house edge.
